about

I recall my special musical moments with the late Contrabasist Gary Peacock.
Gary was my first jazz and composition teacher when I arrived in Seattle in 1982 and started my studies at the Cornish Institute. I took his improvisation and composition class . Gary gave me the foundations for Composing Jazz. I wrote my Monkish Bo Po and the modal "Unspoken Words" at the Gershwin Room overlooking the spectacular Seattle Puget Sound/bay.

Before classes began , we would meet at the cafeteria and discuss politics and life. Obviously I was in awe when he criticized my playing or music. After one year at the Cornish Inst. I decided to move to the East Cost/Boston. I enrolled at the Berklee College of Music. Completed my B.A and then continued my Masters Degree at the New England Conservatory.
My teacher was pianist/composer William Thomas McKinley. As I was about to graduate, Thomas offered me to be his apprentice and record an album with him on Piano , Gary Peacock on Bass and drummer Alex Deutsch.
We set up the date , but I did not tell a soul about the aproaching recording date because of my fear of the evil eye...
We did not rehearse, just met at the taxi and cruised to the amazing Blue Jay recording Studio. And all Gary had to say was: "What happened to your beard man? "
This happend eight years after our initial meeting in Seattle.
During the whole recording session we did first takes only.
I put the Bo Po chart in front of him and we recorded that and then I said to the pianist and drummer go ahead take a break I am going to record a Saxophone and Bass duet .
We recorded " Unspoken Words", so for me that was a closure.
At about Two in the morning the taxi drove me back to my students apartment and I casualty told my roomates that I have just recorded an album with Gary Peacock...
